Mario Kart, everybody loves Mario Kart. Well except me.
I've never really cared for Mario Kart, its just never appealed to me. Maybe its just because I don't like Mario himself as a character, or that his games just aren't for me. Heck I wasn't even aware of Mario until I played Super Smash Bros. for the first time. I grew up on games like Warcraft, and Starcraft which require a great deal of multitasking, making quick decisions, and strategy. Fun Fact: Warcraft was the first word I ever learned to spell.
But even after I discovered Mario in Smash Bros. I didn't want to play him. Mario was just some short dude in suspenders. I wanted to play as the person in the robot suit, (Samus) or that super rad looking dude Captain Falcon. The Captain had everything he needed: a sick outfit, a helmet, and devastating fire attacks, including the infamous Falcon Punch!
Something just made Captain Falcon a far more appealing character to me than Mario. Yes, even something other than the fact that Mario comes from the hallucinogen kingdom, and Captain Falcon is FROM SPAAAACCCEEEEE!!!!!
I don't know really what it is though. I can certainly see why other people find enjoyment from Mario Kart: its colorful, Mario is all over the dang thing, and its easy to pick up and play. But that last point is my problem. Everyone can play it. Now I'm not trying to say that it is bad that anyone can play it, but the randomness of the game can turn me off. I might be the best person playing the game, but then someone gets some item that gives them the advantage. This isn't to say that I don't like to lose. Its just that I would rather lose to someone because I messed up, because they are better than me, or they outmaneuvered me. I hate it when the only reason someone beat me was out of sheer dumb luck. Oh also, that whole zero-g mechanic in Mario Kart 8 is dumb, and lame. F-zero already has you driving on the ceiling, only less slow and boring.
But you know what the best part of F-zero is? There are no items! Luck doesn't play a part in the game at all. It all depends on your skill and stamina. Can you avoid the obstacles and the other racers? Now this does lead to sad fact that people may not want to play the game because of the learning curve. But I love that about the game. Its a dog eat dog world, and if you can't keep up you lose.
Getting the hang of the game is the real challenge. I mean its really hard. But its like the game is testing you. It knows that it isn't for everyone, and it wants to see who will toughen up and stick around. I toughened up, and I'm loving the game. Granted I still suck at it, but I am getting better.
Maybe that was more information than you wanted, but I hope it does answer the question to some of you why you have to beg me to play Mario Kart. I want to let everyone also that I don't think you shouldn't like Mario Kart if you do, this post was just to explain why I prefer F-zero over it. Now then back to driving.
